Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K, phospho PI3K) binds to activated (phosphorylated) protein-Tyr kinases via its SH2 domain and mediates association of the p110 catalytic unit to the plasma membrane.
Phospho PI3K is essential for insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis in insulin-sensitive tissues. It also interacts with IRS-1 during insulin stimulation.
Growth factors and hormones trigger phosphorylation events that coordinate cell growth, cycle entry, migration, and survival.
