Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) family. PPARs are nuclear hormone receptors that bind peroxisome proliferators and regulate peroxisome production. They mediate various biological processes and may be involved in chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, and cancer.
PPAR delta acts as a potent inhibitor of ligand-induced transcription activity of PPAR alpha and PPAR gamma, functioning as an integrator of transcription repression and nuclear receptor signaling. Elevated expression of this gene has been found in colorectal cancer cells and can be repressed by the tumor suppressor protein APC. Mouse knockout studies suggest roles in myelination of the corpus callosum, lipid metabolism, and epidermal cell proliferation.
