Target Information

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO1 or MTCO1) is one of three mitochondrial DNA–encoded subunits (MTCO1, MTCO2, MTCO3) of respiratory Complex IV.
Complex IV, located in the mitochondrial inner membrane, is the final enzyme of the electron transport chain in oxidative phosphorylation.
It consists of 13 polypeptides: three (MTCO1, MTCO2, MTCO3) encoded by mtDNA and ten encoded by nuclear DNA.
Cytochrome c oxidase enzymes contain four redox centers—two hemes (a and a3) and two copper centers (CuA and CuB).
In Complex IV, the hemes and CuB are bound to subunit I.
Mutations in MTCO1 can affect enzyme function and mitochondrial respiratory capacity.
