Nearly all mucosal surfaces are protected by mucin transmembrane glycoproteins, from bronchioles to corneas to reproductive tracts.
Mucin 4 (MUC4) is membrane-bound and plays a crucial role in protection and lubrication of mucosal surfaces.
Abnormal MUC4 expression has been observed in various carcinomas and sarcomas, including fibromyoxoid sarcoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
Immunohistochemical staining for MUC4 is discussed as a potential biomarker for cancer detection.
MUC4 mutations have been linked to certain diseases in Asian populations such as Taiwanese infertility, endometriosis, and gallstone formation in Chinese men.
Due to its role in mucosal protection, MUC4 dysfunction is implicated in metastatic cancer invasions.
