Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed on various cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes. B2M is also found freely in plasma and shares structural homology with immunoglobulin constant regions, forming a beta-pleated sheet structure. It plays roles in antigen processing, presentation, and TCR signaling, particularly in CD8+ cells. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2-microglobulin levels are used to assess renal function and serve as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
