Target Information
Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases with diverse physiological functions. Many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and may serve as novel cancer or disease biomarkers.
This gene is one of fifteen kallikrein subfamily members located in a cluster on chromosome 19. Its encoded enzyme is involved in proteolysis of intercellular cohesive structures preceding desquamation (shedding of the outermost epidermal layer).
Alternative splicing of this gene results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
