HSD11B1은 스트레스 호르몬인 코르티솔을 비활성 대사산물인 코르티손으로 전환하는 미소체 효소입니다. 또한 역반응인 코르티손을 코르티솔로 전환하는 반응도 촉매할 수 있습니다. 과도한 코르티솔은 중심성 비만을 유발할 수 있으며, 이 유전자의 특정 변이는 소아 비만 및 인슐린 저항성과 관련이 있습니다. 이 유전자는 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 두 가지 전사 변이체를 포함합니다.
