Target Information
Albumin is a soluble, monomeric protein comprising about one-half of the blood serum protein. It functions primarily as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones and plays a role in stabilizing extracellular fluid volume. Albumin is a globular, unglycosylated serum protein with a molecular weight of approximately 65,000. It is synthesized in the liver as preproalbumin, which undergoes cleavage of its N-terminal peptide before release from the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The resulting proalbumin is further processed in the Golgi vesicles to produce the secreted albumin.
