Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is the fifth component of complement, playing a key role in inflammatory and cell-killing processes. It consists of alpha and beta chains linked by a disulfide bridge. The activation peptide C5a, an anaphylatoxin with potent spasmogenic and chemotactic activity, is derived from the alpha chain via cleavage. The C5b cleavage product forms a complex with C6, initiating membrane attack complex formation. Mutations in this gene cause complement component 5 deficiency, leading to recurrent infections, and are associated with susceptibility to liver fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
