Target Information
The CNGA1 gene encodes a protein involved in phototransduction. Together with another subunit, it forms a cGMP-gated cation channel in the plasma membrane, enabling depolarization of rod photoreceptors. This represents the final step in the phototransduction cascade.
Mutations in this gene are associated with autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (ARRP). Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
