Target Information
The CNGA1 gene encodes a protein involved in phototransduction. Together with another protein, it forms a cGMP-gated cation channel in the plasma membrane, enabling depolarization of rod photoreceptors. This is the final step in the phototransduction pathway.
Defects in this gene are associated with autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (ARRP).
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
