Target Information
BRCA1 (breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility protein 1) is a nuclear phosphoprotein that maintains genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It forms part of the BASC complex with other tumor suppressors and DNA damage sensors. BRCA1 interacts with RNA polymerase II and histone deacetylase complex, playing key roles in transcription, DNA repair, and recombination. Mutations in BRCA1 are responsible for a significant proportion of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing affects its localization and function, and a related pseudogene is found on chromosome 17.
