Target Information
Retinoic acid, a metabolite of vitamin A, is essential for normal organogenesis but can act as a teratogen at high concentrations during embryonic and fetal development.
It functions through interaction with the nuclear protein retinoic acid receptor (RAR), which belongs to the steroid and thyroid hormone superfamily of nuclear receptor proteins.
These receptors regulate gene expression by binding to specific DNA response elements in target cells.
RAR exists in three major subtypes: alpha, beta, and gamma.
