Product Specific Information

Description:
The monoclonal antibody DE-U-10 recognizes desmin, a class-III intermediate filament protein predominantly found in skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle. Desmin plays a key role in muscle cell development, structure, and mitochondrial function. It forms scaffolds around the Z-disk of sarcomeres.
Desmin knockout mice show defects in muscle function and mitochondrial activity. Mutations in desmin are associated with desmin-related myopathy (DRM), cardiomyopathy dilated type 1I (CMD1I), and neurogenic scapuloperoneal syndrome (Kaeser syndrome).

The DE-U-10 antibody recognizes desmin from multiple species including human, mouse, rat, feline, bovine, goat, hamster, sheep, porcine, rabbit, and chicken. It also labels tumors derived from muscle tissue such as leiomyomas and rhabdomyosarcomas.

Target Information

Desmin (~53 kDa) shows high tissue specificity, expressed mainly in cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle. Its expression is regulated during muscle cell differentiation. In skeletal and cardiac muscle, desmin localizes to the Z-disk and intercalated disk. In smooth muscle, expression is more heterogeneous. Coexpression of vimentin and desmin is observed in muscle-derived tumors such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas. Altered desmin distribution is noted during myocardial dysfunction.
