Its role in maintaining pluripotency makes it valuable for stem cell and regenerative medicine research.
Artificial stem cells (iPS cells) can be generated by expressing POU5F1 along with Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, and c-Myc in fibroblasts.
Recent advances allow iPS cell generation using plasmid expression systems, eliminating viral vectors and improving safety for therapeutic applications.
