Ferritin의 주요 기능은 철을 용해성이고 무독성 형태로 저장하는 것입니다. 이 유전자의 결함은 여러 신경퇴행성 질환 및 고페리틴혈증-백내장 증후군과 관련이 있습니다. 본 유전자는 다수의 pseudogene을 가집니다.
