Target Information
Lin28 is a transcription factor first identified for its key role in developmental timing in C. elegans. Its function in development suggests its utility in generating stem cells for potential cell replacement therapies in degenerative diseases.
Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells can be created by expressing Lin28 along with transcription factors POU5F1, Sox2, and NANOG in mouse fibroblasts. More recent studies show that iPS cells can also be generated using expression plasmids for Lin28, Sox2, POU5F1, and c-Myc, eliminating the need for viral introduction and improving safety for regenerative medicine applications.
