Target Information
ME2 encodes a mitochondrial NAD-dependent malic enzyme, a homotetrameric protein that catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to pyruvate. It was previously weakly linked to Friedreich ataxia, which is now known to result from a mutation in a different gene. Certain single-nucleotide polymorphism haplotypes of this gene have been associated with increased risk for idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
