Target Information
ULBP1 is a ligand for the NKG2D receptor, along with ULBP2 and ULBP3. These ligands activate multiple signaling pathways in primary NK cells, resulting in cytokine and chemokine production. Binding of ULBP ligands to NKG2D induces calcium mobilization and activates JAK2, STAT5, ERK, and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways.
In CMV-infected cells, ULBP1 interacts with soluble CMV glycoprotein UL16. This interaction blocks binding to NKG2D, allowing CMV-infected cells to evade immune detection. UL16 also retains ULBP1 in the ER and cis-Golgi apparatus, preventing its expression on the cell surface.
