This antibody is specific for CD44 (gp90 epitope cluster I), selectively expressed on normal or transformed lymphoid cells that recognize and bind to high endothelial venules. Although raised against human CD44, it cross-reacts with murine, rat, rabbit, primate, sheep, bovine, and goat CD44.

Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays roles in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing, and its expression can be upregulated in certain carcinomas, potentially linked to metastasis.

CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high levels of CD44, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation. The CD44 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, producing multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Disorders associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be implicated in tumor metastasis formation.
