- Sequence Similarities: 98% Mouse/Rat
- Tissue Specificity: Widely expressed, but very low expression in brain. Expressed in epidermis, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, peripheral blood, tissue macrophages, podocytes, and some eye cells. Overexpressed in certain cancers such as melanoma and glioblastoma multiforme.
- Positive Control: L929 cell lysate, A375 cell lysate, U-937 cell lysate, rat heart tissue lysate, B16F1 cell lysates, human lung tissue.
- Subcellular Location: Cell membrane, Melanosome membrane, Early endosome membrane.
- Predicted Band Size: 64 kDa.
Target Information
The GPNMB protein is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein homologous to the pMEL17 precursor, a melanocyte-specific protein. It is expressed in lowly metastatic melanoma cell lines but not in highly metastatic ones, suggesting a potential role in growth delay and reduction of metastatic potential. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
