SMC6는 SMC5-SMC6 복합체의 핵심 구성 요소로, DNA 이중 가닥 절단 복구에 관여합니다. 이 복합체는 SMC1-SMC3 cohesin 복합체를 손상 부위로 유도하여 자매 염색체 간 상동 재조합을 촉진할 수 있습니다. 또한 ALT(Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres) 세포주에서 텔로미어 유지에 필요하며, shelterin 복합체 구성 요소의 SUMO화 및 분해를 매개하여 PML 핵소체 내 ALT 관련 PML body(APB) 형성에 기여합니다. SMC5-SMC6 복합체는 원형 바이러스 DNA와 같은 episomal DNA의 전사를 억제할 수 있습니다.
