Target Information
Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) is responsible for deacetylating lysine residues on the N-terminal part of core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4).
This deacetylation serves as an epigenetic repression marker and plays a key role in transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression, and developmental processes.
HDAC4 acts through large multiprotein complexes and is involved in muscle maturation via interactions with myocyte enhancer factors (MEF2A, MEF2C, MEF2D).
It also participates in MTA1-mediated epigenetic regulation of ESR1 expression in breast cancer.
Mutations in the HDAC4 gene have been associated with Brachydactyly-mental retardation syndrome (BDMR).
