Target Information
Oxygen radicals can damage chromosomal DNA, leading to cell death and mutations. While much focus has been on the repair of 8-oxo-G lesions, numerous other oxidative DNA damages occur due to free radicals. The human NTH1 repair protein acts on many of these damaged sites. As a homologue of E. coli Endonuclease III, NTH is a DNA glycosylase with apurinic/apyrimidinic lyase activity. It exhibits broad substrate specificity, targeting various pyrimidine ring saturation and fragmentation products. Research suggests that NTH plays a crucial role in removing oxidative base lesions in mitochondrial DNA.
