Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione. Several isoforms differ in primary structure and localization:
- GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent enzyme, first discovered in the GPx family.
- GPx2 (GI-GPx): Expressed only at the gastrointestinal epithelium.
- GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma form, mainly expressed by the kidney and released into circulation.
- GPx4 (PH-GPx): Present in most tissues, reduces hydroperoxides in membranes, lipoproteins, and thymine.
- Other mammalian GPx members, except Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific GPx5, possess selenocysteine at the active site.
