Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens and maintains lens transparency and refractive index.
Lens central fiber cells lose their nuclei during development, so crystallins are synthesized and retained throughout life, making them extremely stable proteins.
Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma crystallins belong to a superfamily.
Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, highly symmetrical proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions.
They are differentially regulated after early development.
Four gamma-crystallin genes (γA–γD) and three pseudogenes (γE–γG) form a genomic cluster.
Mutations or aging-related changes in these genes have been implicated in cataract formation.
