The taxon-specific class (phylogenetically-restricted crystallins) differs from ubiquitous crystallins, which constitute the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens and maintain its transparency and refractive index.

This gene encodes a taxon-specific crystallin protein that binds NADPH and shows sequence similarity to bacterial ornithine cyclodeaminases. The encoded protein does not serve a structural role in lens tissue; instead, it binds thyroid hormone, possibly for regulatory or developmental functions.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
