Target Information
Cytokeratins are a group of at least 29 different proteins characteristic of epithelial and trichocytic cells. Cytokeratins 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8 belong to the type II neutral to basic subfamily. Antibodies to cytokeratins serve as specific markers of epithelial cell differentiation and are widely used in tumor identification and classification.
Anti-pan Cytokeratin (mixture) is a broadly reactive reagent recognizing epitopes present in most human epithelial tissues. It aids in typing normal, metaplastic, and neoplastic cells, enhancing staining sensitivity to identify cells that may otherwise show weak staining. This antibody mixture is valuable for distinguishing carcinomas from nonepithelial tumors such as sarcomas, lymphomas, and neural tumors. It is also useful for detecting micrometastases in lymph nodes, bone marrow, and other tissues, and for determining the origin of poorly differentiated tumors.
There are two types of cytokeratins: acidic type I and basic/neutral type II. Cytokeratins usually occur in pairs, one from each type, with type II cytokeratins typically being about 8 kDa larger than their type I counterparts.
