Target Information

ATG4C is involved in autophagy, the process by which endogenous proteins and damaged organelles are degraded intracellularly. Autophagy is essential for cell homeostasis and remodeling during differentiation, metamorphosis, non-apoptotic cell death, and aging. Reduced autophagy levels have been associated with some malignant tumors, suggesting a role in regulating uncontrolled cell growth related to cancer.

This gene encodes a member of the autophagin protein family (C-54 family of cysteine proteases). Alternate transcriptional splice variants encoding the same protein have been characterized. ATG4C cleaves the C-terminal part of MAP1LC3, GABARAPL2, or GABARAP, allowing liberation of form I, which can then be converted to form II. Form II, conjugated with phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), binds to autophagosomes. The protein is highly expressed in skeletal muscle, heart, liver, and testis.
