Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in T helper cells but can also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Expression is observed in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain regions of the brain and gut. CD4 plays a role in early T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck, and may contribute to neuronal damage in immune-mediated diseases of the CNS. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified in this gene (RefSeq, July 2017).
