Target Information
CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on various stem cell populations. It functions as a stem cell marker and may act as a receptor involved in endocytosis, adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. CD34 expression represents a specific developmental state with altered adhesion properties. It may mediate stem cell attachment to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells and serve as a scaffold for glycan attachment, facilitating interactions with lectins. The intracellular domain can be phosphorylated by protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction. CD34 dysfunction has been associated with dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
