Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells.
It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into the active 17 kDa form upon inflammasome activation.
IL-1 beta signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1 alpha, and its activity can be moderated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA).
It plays a key role in innate host defense and acute-phase responses, with elevated levels linked to chronic inflammatory conditions.
Neutralizing antibodies against IL-1 beta have potential therapeutic value.
