Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both in keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, some microvascular endothelial cells also express cytokeratins.
There are at least 20 cytokeratins with molecular weights ranging from 40–70 kDa and isoelectric points between 5–8.5, identifiable by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Cytokeratins are biochemically divided into two classes:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
