Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both in keratinizing tissues (such as skin) and non-keratinizing cells (such as mesothelial cells). Although not traditional markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins can be present in some microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 different cytokeratins with molecular weights ranging from 40–70 kDa and isoelectric points between 5–8.5. These can be identified via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Most CK family members belong to either type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides) classes, with at least one member of each class expressed in all epithelial cells.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins are valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
