Product Specific Information

By Western blot, two bands are detected in rat cerebellum homogenate: a prominent band at 50 kDa corresponding to rodent GFAP and a lower band at approximately 45 kDa, likely representing a proteolytic fragment derived from the GFAP molecule.

Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a member of the class III intermediate filament protein family. It is specifically expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the central nervous system, satellite cells of peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. Neural stem cells also strongly express GFAP.

Antibodies to GFAP are useful as markers of astrocytic cells and for identifying brain tumors derived from astrocytic cells. GFAP is also found in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells of the liver, some salivary tumor cells, and erythrocytes. It serves as a marker to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in GFAP cause Alexander disease, a rare disorder of astrocytes in the central nervous system. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
