Target Information

Myocilin is an extracellular protein expressed in the eye, including the retina, trabecular meshwork, and ciliary body. It can form homomultimers in vivo and associate with extracellular matrix components via interactions with the Hep II domain of FibroPVRL1. Myocilin also interacts with the myosin regulatory light chain, suggesting a role in the actomyosin system and linking it to the functional status of the trabecular meshwork (TM), which regulates intraocular pressure (IOP). Dysfunction of the TM may lead to elevated IOP and development of glaucoma, a major cause of blindness.
The MYOC gene (also designated TIGR) maps to the GLC1A locus on chromosome 1q24.3 and is associated with mutations linked to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
