Target Information
Myocilin is an extracellular protein expressed in the eye, including the retina, trabecular meshwork, and ciliary body. It can form homomultimers in vivo and associate with extracellular matrix components via interactions with the Hep II domain of FibroPVRL1. Additionally, myocilin interacts with myosin regulatory light chain, suggesting a role in the actomyosin system and trabecular meshwork (TM) function, which regulates intraocular pressure (IOP). Dysfunction in TM may cause elevated IOP and lead to glaucoma, a major cause of blindness. The MYOC gene (also known as TIGR) is located on chromosome 1q24.3 and mutations are linked to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
