Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a physiologically active peptide functioning as a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating agent. Angiotensin II regulates blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance and plays a key role in the renin-angiotensin system. Variations in the presence of a 287 bp Alu repeat element in this gene have been linked to circulating enzyme levels and cardiovascular pathophysiologies. Two major alternatively spliced variants encode somatic and testicular isoforms, both enzymatically active. Additional splice variants have been identified but are not fully characterized.
