Target Information
MTCO2 is a component of cytochrome c oxidase, the final enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain responsible for oxidative phosphorylation. This complex catalyzes the reduction of oxygen to water, transferring electrons from cytochrome c and generating the electrochemical gradient that drives ATP synthesis. The binuclear center (BNC) in subunit 1, formed by heme A3 and copper B, reduces molecular oxygen to water using electrons from cytochrome c and protons from the mitochondrial matrix.
