Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
It functions as a molecular chaperone involved in proper folding and assembly of polypeptides into multisubunit proteins.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains and partial complexes of T cell receptor and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes.
It retains incompletely folded proteins in the ER.
Unlike soluble ER proteins with the KDEL sequence, calnexin lacks this motif but contains positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER retention.
Calnexin includes:
- ER luminal domain: 461 amino acids
- Transmembrane segment: 22 amino acids
- Cytoplasmic tail: 89 amino acids
