Target Information
SOAT1 (sterol O-acyltransferase-1), also designated ACAT1, is a homotetrameric enzyme that catalyzes the formation of cholesterol esters from cholesterol and long-chain fatty acyl-coenzyme A (acyl-CoA).
The human SOAT1 gene maps to chromosome 1 and encodes a protein localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in tissues such as liver, kidney, adrenal glands, and macrophages.
SOAT1 is involved in cellular cholesterol homeostasis and foam cell formation, contributing to atherosclerosis progression.
SOAT inhibitors are under development for atherosclerosis treatment.
SOAT2 (sterol O-acyltransferase-2, ACAT2) catalyzes cholesterol esterification in mammalian cells and localizes to the ER of intestinal cells.
SOAT2 deficiency is associated with severe mental retardation and hypotonus.
