RBP4 (Retinol Binding Protein 4) belongs to the lipocalin family and serves as the specific carrier for retinol (vitamin A) in the blood. It transports retinol from the liver to peripheral tissues. In plasma, the RBP-retinol complex interacts with transthyretin, preventing renal filtration loss. Vitamin A deficiency impairs secretion of RBP4, leading to defective retinol delivery to epidermal cells.
