Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. There are at least 20 different CKs, generally classified as type I (acidic) or type II (basic).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratins are expressed in all epithelial cells.
