BCL-2는 세포사멸(apoptosis)의 핵심 조절자로서, 세포 생존 또는 사멸을 조절합니다. BCL-2 계열 단백질은 서로 이합체를 형성하여 세포사멸을 더욱 정밀하게 조절합니다. 예를 들어 Bag1은 BCL-2와 이합체를 형성하여 항-세포사멸 효과를 강화합니다. Bax와 Bak은 미토콘드리아에서 cytochrome c 방출을 유도하여 세포사멸을 시작하는 데 중요한 역할을 합니다. BCL-2의 지속적 발현은 여포성 림프종과 같은 암 발생과 관련이 있으며, 이 단백질의 과발현은 B세포 림프종 및 전립선암 등 다양한 인간 암에서 보고되었습니다.
