Target Information
Synapsin 3 is a member of the synapsin gene family, encoding neuronal phosphoproteins associated with the cytoplasmic surface of synaptic vesicles. Family members share conserved domains (A, C, and E) and are involved in synaptogenesis and neurotransmitter release modulation, suggesting roles in neuropsychiatric diseases.
Synapsin 3 contains a unique domain J between domains C and E. Located on chromosome 22q12.3, a potential schizophrenia susceptibility locus. The TIMP3 gene resides within an intron of this gene and is transcribed in the opposite direction.
