Target Information

Synaptotagmin 1 is a synaptic vesicle membrane glycoprotein widely expressed throughout the CNS. It acts as a Ca²⁺ sensor in the regulation of exocytosis and neurotransmitter release. Ca²⁺-mediated binding of Synaptotagmin 1 to SNAP25 is essential for triggering membrane fusion. Specific residues within its C2B domain regulate endocytic rate and vesicle size. Synaptotagmin 1 interacts with acidic phospholipids and several proteins including neurexins, syntaxin, and AP2. Dysfunction is associated with food-borne and infant botulism.
