Target Information
Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in various phosphorylated forms (up to ~82 kDa). It regulates localization and function of tight junctions. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, increasing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability to large molecules. Expression levels vary by tissue: high and continuous in brain, lower and discontinuous in non-neural tissues. Structural features are conserved across species. Under-expression of occludin contributes to increased permeability in tumor endothelial tight junctions and brain tumor edema.
