Target Information
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter genes regulate the amount of dietary cholesterol retained in the body.
ABCG1 (also known as ABC8) is expressed on the cell surface and in intracellular compartments of cholesterol-laden macrophages.
It is induced in monocyte-derived macrophages during cholesterol influx mediated by acetylated low-density lipoprotein (acLDL).
Conversely, lipid efflux mediated by HDL(3) suppresses ABCG1 expression.
