Target Information
The modification of proteins with ubiquitin is a key cellular mechanism for degrading abnormal or short-lived proteins. Ubiquitination involves three enzyme classes:
- E1: Ubiquitin-activating enzymes
- E2: Ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes
- E3: Ubiquitin-protein ligases
UBE2D1 encodes a member of the E2 enzyme family, related to the stimulator of iron transport (SFT), and is up-regulated in hereditary hemochromatosis. It participates in ubiquitination of p53 and HIF1α by interacting with E1 and E3 enzymes.
