Target Information
Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase: Pol I, II, and III.
Each polymerase synthesizes a different class of RNA:
- Pol I transcribes rRNA genes for the precursor of 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA.
- Pol II transcribes protein-encoding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs that influence RNA processing.
- Pol III transcribes 5S rRNA genes and all tRNA genes.
Each RNA polymerase is assembled from 9 to 15 different polypeptides. The RPB6 and RPB8 subunits are shared by all three RNA polymerases.
